Program Description

The S.K.A.T.E. program is an academic recognition program for youth hockey organizations. Proven to impact the academic performance of youth hockey players, it is fairly easy to implement with your hockey club. The successful implementation of the program is dependant on two things: commitment of support from your youth hockey organization and the willingness of one or more parent volunteers to take leadership in activating the program. Here are some tips on how to implement the S.K.A.T.E. program in your youth hockey organization.

Tips on How To Implement S.K.A.T.E.

1.                    Inform all eligible players and parents of the availability and criteria for the S.K.A.T.E. program.  Generally, pre-season youth hockey registration is an excellent time to distribute promotional literature.

2.                    Identify and secure one parent volunteer as the S.K.A.T.E. Coordinator.  With large youth hockey organizations of over 100 players, it is common for the S.K.A.T.E. Coordinator to invite other volunteers from within the youth hockey organization to serve on a S.K.A.T.E. committee to provide administrative support.

3.                    Once the youth hockey season is underway, the S.K.A.T.E. Coordinator  should contact all team managers in the organization, informing them about the program.  S.K.A.T.E. can provide samples of letters and other forms that can assist team managers in distributing information to teams.

4.                    Establish protocol for collecting information for qualified applicants to the S.K.A.T.E. program.  Generally, the team managers can collect grade information and pass along the names of those players who successfully meet the criteria to the S.K.A.T.E. Coordinator.

5.                    The S.K.A.T.E. Coordinator, with the help of other volunteers, are encouraged to contact local businesses and community organizations for donations of products and services to the program.  Incentives are a key ingredient for encouraging youth players to excel as student athletes and the S.K.A.T.E. program is generally an appealing program that attracts support from the community.

6.                    Youth Hockey Coaches are encouraged to schedule and preside over "study halls" throughout the season for youth hockey teams to gather for group study. These generally provide a helpful reminder to players of qualifications and incentives.

7.                    Youth hockey organizations who participate with S.K.A.T.E. are encouraged to host a "SKATE RALLY" at the end of the season to invite all qualifying participants who will receive award certificates and prizes (optional). This season ending event provides an opportunity for players, coaches and parents to celebrate accomplishments in the classroom for both individuals and teams.
